Youth Mentoring Initiative

Pocono Services for Families and Children provides opportunities for youth from local school districts, colleges and universities to mentor preschool-aged children. PSFC staff provides youth with early education and literacy training to assist them in working appropriately with PSFC’s economically disadvantaged and disabled preschool children. Youth can visit PSFC classrooms and work one-on-one with children. Youth may also host children in their schools. To date, more than 600 youth have participated in PSFC’s Youth Mentoring Initiative.

For more information please contact Chris Grape-Garvey, community resources coordinator, at 570-421-2711 ext. 238 or email

When teens mentor PSFC children they:

  • build children’s self esteem
  • help children master new skills
  • read to children and children read to them
  • introduce children to sports and teamwork
  • host children at their high school for literacy events
  • teach a lesson
  • assist with translations
  • listen, listen and listen!

The teens also:

  • learn tolerance for children with special needs
  • gain an understanding of early childhood development
  • practice patience and caring
  • learn what it feels like to give back to their community
  • get a glimpse into teaching as a career
  • touch the lives of PSFC children and make a difference!

Teen quote:
“I was surprised by how smart the preschoolers were! They were also very loving and compassionate.”
